2012 Prospects: Andreas Athanasiou hopes to speed his way to top of NHL draft

They say that speed kills. And for whichever team selects London Knights' forward Andreas Athanasiou in June's NHL entry draft, they're going to find themselves with a veritable assassin in their organization.

For a league that puts a premium on speed, the Woodbridge, ON native will be a valuable asset. But while the young forward does put in the time to improve his stride, speed is just a natural component of this — and many other — games.

"It's just natural. It's always been a key part of my game playing hockey. Even when I'm playing basketball, soccer, track — I was on a track-and-field club team outside of school — I've always been pretty fast," Athanasiou explained. "It's always been my go-to — it's always been there, even when I was a little kid. I remember going on the ice with my dad when I was really young, maybe a couple of years old, and having him swing me around so that I could just pick up tons and tons of speed and just fly around. I just loved it."

HISTORY:

During his stellar junior career with the Sudbury Wolves of the Ontario
Hockey League, Derek Armstrong was drafted in the fifth-round of the 1992
National Hockey League Entry Draft by the New York Islanders. Now in his
seventh professional season, he has played 82 NHL games with the Islanders
(1993-94, 95-96, 96-97), Ottawa Senators (1997-98) and New York Rangers
(1998-99), totalling 19 points (nine goals, 10 assists) and 56 penalty
minutes. In 359 minor league games with Salt Lake (1993-94), Denver
(1994-95), Utah (1996-97) and Detroit (1997-98) of the International Hockey
League, and Worcester (1995-96) and Hartford (1997 ? present) of the American
Hockey League, Armstrong has 108 goals, 182 assists and 328 penalty minutes.
In 1995, he was a member of the IHL Turner Cup Champion Denver Grizzlies. He
is a two-time AHL All-Star (1999, 2000), who was the Bauer Canadian Player of
the Game in 1999. His 105 assists and 162 points for the Hartford WolfPack
are all-time club records, and last season’s 80 points (29 goals, 51 assists)
are a single-season club record, as well as a personal high.

The 1999 AHL All Star Game will have the skills competion on January 24
and on January 25 the all-star game will be played. The game will be held
in the First Union Center in Philadelphia, home of the NHL Flyers. The
rosters are pretty even and the game will be pretty good. The rosters are as
