Riding Shot Gun

Keeping it close to home and within the organization has been an Oiler trait since the the team arrived in the National Hockey League. This shows loyalty, not only to the players and staff, but the fans as well.

Both new assistants bring different but valuable skills and experiences which will aid in forming a strong team concept with the emphasis on improving every time you hit the ice. Both coaches believe in the system in place and will add little wrinkles to the plan by bringing out the best qualities in each player.

Adding another former Oiler dynasty teammate in ex-defenseman Charlie Huddy was a fine choice, with his experience with the Rangers coaching staff and five Stanley cup rings, he brings a lot to the table. His first project this year is to personally tutor the likes of Tom Poti, Eric Brewer and Sean Brown which is the perfect opportunity fot the trio to take their individual games to the next level. I would not be suprised to see Poti make it to the All-Star Game this season, while Eric may have the break out year the scouts have been waiting for, since the style of play in Edmonton suits his talents. And maybe most importantly, guiding Sean into a dependable tough defensive defenseman that plays with more discipline.

Edmonton drafts big

by pbadmin
on

At this year’s draft the Oilers with the first three players drafted at 6’5″,
6’4.5″ and 6’3″ Edmonton took huge steps to ensure the future looms
larger than life.

After stealing defense man Eric Brewer and left winger Josh Green with a
second round pick 35th overall in this years draft for defense man Roman
Hamrlik from the New York Islanders right before the beginning of the
second round only added to the success felt by the Oilers brass. General
manager Kevin Lowe and director of player personnel fulfilled their
mandate of adding size and gritty players to a fairly decent list of
prospects whom rate in the top ten in the league on regular basis, the
retiring of long time chief head scout Barry Fraser they wanted to go
out with a bang.

1st Rnd – 17th pick: LW/RW Alexei Mikhnov 6-5/200 Team: Yaroslavl
(RUS) Dob: 08-31-82 Sh: Left

Notes: This young man remains a bit of a enigma due to the infrequency
and lack of availability to see the native of Ukraine play, with the
cancellations of games and tournaments some scouts were reluctant to
make a full evaluation on him. With comparisons to Oleg Kvasha, Nik
Antropov and Andre Nazorov what to expect from Alexei may be hard to
gauge however his upside and potential could very well make him one of
the steals in the draft. with a large Ukrainian and Russian community in
Edmonton they will receive him with open arms and make Alexei fell like Read more»

Oilers Expansion & Day 1 Draft Analysis

by pbadmin

No surprise’s in Expansion

There was very little doubt about who was going to be chosen off the Oilers roster in this years Expansion Draft. Centerman Jim Dowd went to the Minnesota Wild and Swede defenseman Bert Robertsson was picked up by Columbus.

With the loss of these two players someone will have too fill the void as a checking line center and pesky number six defenseman. However, there are a few prospects that could come up and fill the void, and the possibility is still there to pick up a free agent that does not hurt the pocket book. Although Jimmy Dowd had success on the fourth line this season ,with his linemates Boyd Devereaux and George Laraque, that would have changed due to the injury to Boyd at the end of the season that might end his playing career.

On defense their is a few young defensemen ready to take Bert’s spot and leaving one or both of them in the farm team again for another year may not be healthy for the development and confidence of the players. But the loss of two character players is still too bad and I wish them both success with their new teams just not at the expense of Edmonton.

High on Lowe

by pbadmin
on
Naming Kevin Lowe is a breath of fresh air to Edmonton, even though it came down to the last minute the best man for the job was ready and willing to take the franchise to the level of success they are accustomed to. Several attributes of the new General Manager will hopefully spill over onto the team. With his fiery temperament, competitiveness and unwillingness to say die he may mentally be the shot in the arm the players need to give them a gritty edge.

Winning six Stanley Cups, 5 from Edmonton and one in New York, and a couple years of coaching was enough of a criteria to the ownership group to name him the second General Manager in franchise history and it didn’t hurt that he was the pupil of Glen Sather for the better part of twenty years. Players were ecstatic and relieved when the announcement came in and ther was a resounding sigh in the locker room knowing that a big shakeup won’t happen. The Oilers respect and are confident in his abilities to guide the team.

Former teammate and CTV sports analyst Craig Simpson felt that this was the opportunity he has been waiting for and Kevin had his heart strings pulled by his ties to the city of Edmonton and the team. Since being the first draft pick in team history back in 1979, and being the player to score the first goal, Kevin has come full circle from prospect defenseman, to assistant coach, to head coach, and finally general manager.

Oilers 2000 Draft Analysis

by pbadmin
on
Finally the Oilers may discontinue their horrendous draft record from the years 1984 to 1992, where not one of their first round picks made the team, by having another solid day at picking and choosing the hope for the future. Under the Current salary restrictions of being a small market team Edmonton must build through the draft since it has very little chance of competing on the free agent market. Also, development of these players is even more crucial because of the recent resignation of Glen Sather who made one savvy deal after another to keep his team from falling into the basement of the league.

This years war room is headed by director of player personnel Kevin Pendergast who has been with the Oilers for nine years and is on the lookout for players who might eventually have to replace Doug Weight since he is a free agent in two seasons. A big scoring center is at the top of the list, and preferably one that could possibly come and play in a couple of seasons. This would be a luxury they have not had since Jason Arnott.
