History – Chouinard has been a Canadiens “surprise pick” when he’s been selected 16th overall in the 1st round of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. Most experts were expecting the Habs to draft another Quebec Remparts prospect, Simon Gagne, who’ve been picked 6 spots later by Philadelphia. The Canadiens scouting staff then explained that they chose Chouinard because of his size and his scoring ability. They also said that they were expecting Eric do walk in his father’s footsteps. Eric’s father, Guy Chouinard, was a dangerous sniper for the Atlanta Flames in the late 70′s and he’s now the Quebec Remparts head-coach.

-Michael Ryder had a good week with 5 points in 3 games.

Awards -Michael Ryder was named the QMJHL’s offensive player of the month for September.

Hab You Heard?
-Andrei Markov, the Habs’ sixth round pick during the 98 Entry Draft is leading all Russian League defensemen in points. He has 5 goals and 6 assists in 14 games for Moscow Dynamo.
-Vadim Tarasov, the Habs’ seventh round pick during the 99 Entry Draft is having a strong season with Metalburg (HK) of the Russian League. In 13 games played he is 9-3-1, with a 2.20 goals against average, and a .904 save percentage.

-Evan Lindsay, the Habs’ fourth round pick during the 99 Entry Draft was temporarily promoted to the Habs’ AHL affiliate in Quebec. Lindsay’s call-up was the result of Garon’s call-up, which was due to Hackett’s injury. Lindsay should be returned to Talahasee of the ECHL in the next few days. Lindsay has yet to play a regular season game for any team, in any league this season.

Canadiens Junior Prospect Update

With the Junior Hockey season finally upon us we can again begin to follow the Montreal Canadiens’ junior prospects. The entry draft not only gave us a few more players to follow, but also gave us one less player to follow, as Gregor Baumgartner re-entered the 99 draft when Montreal failed to sign him to a contract prior to the imposed deadline.

The old faces include Francois Beauchemin, a hard-nosed defenseman who was Montreal’s 3rd choice in the 98 draft, and is currently playing with Acadie-Bathurst in the QMJHL; Eric Chouinard, a tall finesse player who was the Habs’ 1st choice in the 98 draft, and is currently playing for Quebec in the QMJHL; And Michael Ryder, a natural scorer who was the Habs’ 8th choice in the 98 draft, and is currently playing with Hull in the QMJHL.

Missing faces include Jason Ward, an intensity driven winger who was the Habs’ 1st choice in the 97 draft, and is no longer of junior age. Ward is currently playing with Quebec, Montreal’s AHL affiliate. The final missing face is Mike Ribeiro, the CHL’s leading scorer last season and the Habs’ 2nd choice in the 98 draft. Ribeiro made the Canadiens’ roster out of training camp. He played in the opening game against Toronto with mixed results. He looked good on the power play setting up two of his teammates for good scoring opportunities. But was often moved easily off the puck by the bigger and stronger Maple Leaf players.
