Auston Matthews is taking an unconventional path to the NHL, and has earned a few accolades already while playing in Switzerland. Two electric playmakers go head-to-head in a battle of assist machines in the QMJHL, and a pair of potential Canadian teammates will likely see a lot of each other in a weekend contest. The Tampa Bay Lightning’s newest signee lines up against a powerhouse forward in what could be a preview of what to expect in the future from both Floridian franchises. NCAA hockey is back, and two Top-20 teams are set to clash in a non-conference game to close out this week’s edition of Prospect Faceoff. In the Eastern Conference, it’s now the Atlantic and North Divisions – with the Manchester Monarchs, Worcester Sharks and Norfolk Admirals no longer AHL franchises. All three have re-located west as the league has added five teams in California as part of the AHL’s western expansion. Read more»

The Nylander family is in the news lately, and the youngest family member, Alex, just scored one of the prettiest goals of the year. Another family, the Strome’s, are making waves themselves, but again it’s youngest brother Matt that started the year off hot. There’s more, too, as top prospects in Tampa Bay and Winnipeg push for playing time just like the world-famous Hanson Brothers did. Read more»

The Pittsburgh Penguins have gone to great lengths to improve their forwards under the guidance of GM Jim Rutherford. But it has not been without great cost. The team has traded a substantial amount of assets over the past year and lacks much in the way of high-end depth. However, there are several players pushing for roles in the NHL, as well as a couple promising players down the pipeline. Read more»
