Team Slovakia put up a good battle, but Team Russia was able to hang on to defeat the Slovaks by a 2-1 score on the final day of the preliminary round at the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship. The win for the Russians sends them to a quarterfinal matchup with Denmark, while Slovakia has the uneviable task of facing off against what might be the best country at this year’s tournament, Sweden. As Slovakia prepares for the 2016 World Junior Championship that begins Saturday in Helsinki, Finland, it has become more and more clear that their tournament is all about survival. The Hockey’s Future ranking of the Top 50 NHL prospects for the Fall of 2015 is now in the books, but there is still the group of 10 honorable mentions that should receive their due. At least a few of these players could arguably have been included in the lower reaches of the main list, and they may well find their way onto the Spring list in early 2016 once prospects on the main list have graduated.
