The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Justin DiBenedetto of the Sarnia Sting is the Boston Pizza OHL Player of the Week for the week ending October 12 for recording five goals and four assists for nine points in three games. He also finished the week with a plus-3 plus-minus rating.
DiBenedetto had a career night on Sunday when he scored five goals and added two assists for seven points in a 7-2 win over the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. He scored a natural hat-trick in the first period that began with a goal 39 seconds into the contest. His second and third goals came on the power play as the Sting capitalized on a two-man advantage. The power play goals were scored 15 seconds apart. He would add two goals in the second period including one shorthanded and was named the game’s first star. DiBenedetto recorded a single assist in a 4-3 home loss to the Windsor Spitfires on Friday night and an assist to open the scoring on the power play in a 5-2 loss to the Saginaw Spirit on Saturday.
DiBenedetto, a 20-year-old from Vaughan, ON is in his fifth OHL season and third with the Sting. Last season in Sarnia he scored 39 goals and 54 assists for 93 points in 58 games played.
Joey Hishon of the Owen Sound Attack and Brandon Mashinter of the Kitchener Rangers were also considered for the award this week. Both forwards scored a hat-trick going head-to-head in their game Friday night that saw the Rangers edge the Attack 7-6. Hishon finished the week with five goals and two assists for seven points in three games. Mashinter had four goals and one assist for five points in two games.
