Fantasy Team in the Making

By Gordon Lee
There are many factors that should be considered when constructing a fantasy team- talent, toughness, leadership among others. A team may have a lot of skill, but will fail if you don’t have a good chemistry.

A fantasy team should consist of a variety of players capable of performing the best at different tasks. Goal scorers will be needed to fill the nets, enforcers to stand up for their star players and checkers to stop the opposition’s top stars from scoring.
Now you know what makes up a great fantasy team, it is time to present the players I feel best fit this elite team.

Peter Forsberg – Arguably the best all around player the league has to offer. Forsberg plays with grit and determination everynight, going into the corners doing the dirty work. He is a franchise player and one to build a team around. His soft hands are known best for his playmaking ability and highlight plays. Put his toughness and strength factor in his resume and you have a player feared by all. Forsberg’s consistency can be counted on night in and out. Along with his great offensive skills and emphasis on ‘D’, he is a can’t miss player.

Mike Modano – A great leader on and off the ice, Modano can determine the direction a team is headed in. The 6’3, 205 pounder is feared by goalies around the league. He can be counted on to score the big goals- 8 GWG in ‘99-00 and many key goals in the playoffs. Modano lead his team with 81 points in the regular season and one point short of 24 in the playoffs for the league lead. Considered one of the most exciting players in the league, Modano is more than worthy of making it on anyone’s fantasy team.

Steve Yzerman – Don’t let his age fool you, at age 35, Yzerman is still one of the best in the league. Having won the Selke, he has proven what a great defensive player he is along with his explosive offensive output. Like the players above, Steve is a tremendous leader captaining his team to two Stanley Cups. Yzerman reads the ice extremely well and still has a lot of gas in his tank left. He can be counted on in all situations, from a man short to powerplays- where he tallied 15 goals. You just can’t go wrong with Yzerman on your team.

Stayed tuned next time for more on the other positions of constructing a great fantasy team.
