Nine games into his NHL career, Florida Panthers defenseman Aaron Ekblad has netted his first NHL goal, and it was an important one, to boot, as the goal stood as the game-winner in the Panthers’ 2-1 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers.

The goal came on a Panthers’ power play with less than five minutes to go in the third period. Stationed at the right point, Ekblad took a feed from Panthers’ defender Brian Campbell and blasted a shot past Flyers’ goaltender Steve Mason to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead.

Ekblad was the first selection overall at the 2014 NHL Draft after starring for the OHL‘s Barrie Colts, but Colts’ fans may have to settle for watching their former captain from afar. The Windsor, ON native has completed his nine-game “tryout” with the Panthers, but it seems highly unlikely that the Panthers will return the talented defenseman to his junior club.
