Although they are tied with Switzerland for the bottom position in Group B at the 2015 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 World Championship, Team Latvia’s performance at this tournament has not been without its good points. The team has generally been competitive in each of their games, and they did manage to produce six goals against Canada.

One of the players with pro experience competing for Latvia at this U18 is forward Rudolfs Balcers. Balcers competes in Norway for the Stavanger Oilers, where he posted eight goals and 21 assists in 36 games in the 2014-15 season. Balcers was held pointless in the first three games of the tournament, but contributed a pair of goals in Latvia’s 3-2 overtime loss to Switzerland on Monday. The loss sends the Latvians to the relegation round.

Balcers is eligible for the 2015 NHL Draft, and is ranked 80th among European skaters by NHL Central Scouting.

Balcers spoke with Hockey’s Future following the loss to Canada, a conversation that is captured in this HF video.
