The main goal for Team Switzerland heading into the 2016 IIHF U18 World Championship was to gain a berth in the quarterfinals. That mission was accomplished by virtue of points earned in an overtime win and overtime loss, so now the goal is to earn a berth in the medal round, a tall order given that their quarterfinal opponent will be Canada.

The Swiss wrapped up their preliminary round with a hard-fought, 4-0 loss to the USA. While the U.S. had the clear edge in talent, the Swiss countered with a mostly consistent effort plus strong goaltending from Philip Wuthrich (SC Bern – SUI) to keep the game from getting out of hand.

Switzerland’s leading scorer through the preliminary round games was forward Nico Hischier (SC Bern – SUI). Hischier, a prospect for the 2017 NHL Draft, has shown many flashes of the skill that makes him one of the better offensive prospects to come out of Switzerland in recent years. In four games, he has scored a goal and added three assists.

Hischier spoke with Hockey’s Future following the loss to the USA, with his comments being captured in this HF video.
