FORGE IN ANOTHER SHOOTOUT
NEVILLE ISLAND — The Pittsburgh Forge Junior A hockey team defeated the USA
National Under-17 Team, 2-1, last Friday night in an overtime shootout at
the Island Sports Center. With the victory, the Forge improved its record
to 19-7-2, which is the second-best mark in the North American Hockey
League.
The USA National Team jumped in front 1-0 at the 3:19 mark of the opening
period on an unassisted goal by Michael Bartlett. Later in the first-period
the Forge tied the game on a goal by Andy Brandt at the 17:08 mark. Mike
Handza and Andy Cote picked up the assists on Brandt’s 11th goal of the
season. There was no scoring in the second and third periods or during the
five-minute, sudden death overtime period. That sent the game to a
shootout. Both teams scored on their first attempt of the shootout with
Robert Earle of Team USA and Andy Cote of Pittsburgh getting the goals.
Forge goaltender Tim Heneroty then stopped five consecutive shooters, before
the Forge won the game when Brian Hartman’s backhander beat Team USA goalie
Gerald Coleman.
Whats coming up: The Forge will next see action on Saturday, December 22
when the team travels to Plymouth, Michigan (near Detroit) for a 7:05 p.m.
contest against the NAHL’s best team, the Compuware Ambassadors. After
that, Pittsburgh’s next two games will be Friday and Saturday, January 4-5
when the Springfield Junior Blues visit the Island Sports Center for a pair
of 7:30 p.m. games. Tickets for the Springfield games and all remaining
Pittsburgh Forge home games are available by calling (412) 269-4478.
