Jr. Blues Make Couturier #1 Pick

By Ron Valerino

The Springfield Jr. Blues selected Cory Couturier of the Marquette Electricians as the first over all pick in the 2002 North American Hockey League (NAHL) Entry Draft. With the Jr. Blues holding the top pick, it was unknown by many to whom the Jr. Blues would select. One person who did know was the Traverse City, MI native Couturier, who has been in contact with Jr. Blues Head Coach / GM Nick Pollos for quite some time.

“We have spent a lot of time watching Corey this past season, we also spent a lot of time talking to him and his family after the season” says Pollos… “Cory is a great young man, both on and off the ice. He has great work ethic and great skills and will be an asset to our organization this coming season.”

Couturier starred for the Marquette Electricians Midget Major Team this past season where he helped guide his team to a berth in the Michigan Midget AAA State Championship Game. With the Jr. Blues looking to re-tool this season, new Head Coach / GM Nick Pollos also selected forwards Jim Fuhs (Pittsburgh Hornets AAA) Danny Riedle (Mid South Storm AAA) and Gino Pisellini (Team Illinois 86).

On the Blue Line, the Jr. Blues added skill and size by selecting Michael Findorff (6’5″ / 205, Pikes Peak AAA) and Shane Foster (6’4″ / 205, Wisconsin H.S.) “We are very please with the results of our draft” said Pollos, “We addressed all our needs and are looking forward to the new season”. In addition, the Jr. Blues also have some quality players returning as they look to build a new tradition and get back to North American Hockey League prominence.
