AHL Calder Cup Preview

Bridgeport, CT – The Sound Tigers and the Wolves are the 10th and 11th teams to reach the Calder Cup Finals in their first year in the AHL. That means that one of these two teams will be the sixth team to win the. Calder Cup in their first year of operation in the AHL. The others are the 1994 Portland Pirates, the 1985 Sherbrooke Canadiens, the 1978 Maine Mariners, the 1972 Nova Scotia Voyagers, and the 1937 Syracuse Stars.

In the regular season the Sound Tigers had a record of 43-25-8-4 for 98 points. They finished in 1st in the regular season in the East Division and in the AHL. The Sound Tigers had a home record of 26-10-4 and were 17-19-4 on the road. Their power play was ranked third with 19.5% efficiency, while they were fourteenth in penalty killing at a rate of 83.3%. They scored 240 goals while allowing 192 goals against, a difference of +48.

The Chicago Wolves had a regular season record of 37-31-7-5 for 86 points. They finished in fourth place of the Western Division. The Wolves had a home record of 19-17-4 and a road record of 18-19-3. They were 16.5% on the power play and ranked thirteenth, on the penalty kill they were eleventh with 83.7% efficiency. They scored 250 goals in the regular season while allowing 236 goals, a difference of +14.

In the playoffs the Sound Tigers have a record of 11-4, and have won three series. The Wolves come into Bridgeport with a record in the playoffs of 13-7, and have won four series.

To make it to the finals the Sound Tigers defeated the Manitoba Moose, 3-1 in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals. In the Eastern Conference Semi Finals the Sound Tigers defeated the St. John’s Maple Leafs 4-0. In the Eastern Conference Finals the Sound Tigers defeated the Hamilton Bulldogs 4-3.

The Chicago Wolves made it to the finals by defeating the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks 2-1 in the qualifying round. In the Western Conference Quarterfinals the Wolves defeated the Grand Rapids Griffins 3-2. The Western Conference Semifinals saw the Wolves defeated the Syracuse Crunch 4-3. In the Western Conference Finals they defeated the Houston Aeros 4-1.
