The ECHL Prospect Update will be used to spotlight players who have a chance to make an impact at the next level, whether it be the AHL, IHL, or the NHL.

David Van Drunen Team: Baton Rouge Kingfish Pos: Defense
Ht: 6′ Wt: 200 Born: Sherwood Park, Alta 1/31/76
Contract: Ottawa Senators ( signed free agent contract on May 2, 1997 )

David has been described by Kingfish Head Coach Dave Schultz ( yes, “The Hammer” himself ) as “a great young talent that has the potential to become a very good professional”. After being assigned to Baton Rouge on November 7th, Van Drunen has been solid on the blueline. He currently leads the team in the plus/minus catagory with a plus-8. While he has been steady in his own end , he has also chipped in some offense , with 7 goals and 15 assists.

Notes: Played entire junior career with the Prince Albert Raiders of the WHL….earned a spot on this years ECHL All-Star team….5 games with Hershey of the AHL this season.

Kevin Popp Team: Birmingham Bulls Pos: Defense
Ht: 6′ 2″ Wt: 212 Hometown: Surrey, BC Born: 2/26/76
Drafted By: Buffalo Sabres 119th overall 1995

Kevin is a big, strong Defenseman who is having little trouble adjusting to the Pro ranks. While Popp is getting better every game at his position, he will be looked at for his enforcer skills. He is a warrior. Word travelled quickly around the ‘coast’ that it’s a bad idea to drop the gloves with Kevin. He could easily step into almost any line-up, in any league , and take care of business. When brought into training camp this year Popp was noted to be ” no stranger to danger ” by Bulls Coach Dennis Desrosiers. He won’t score alot..only 2 points all season , but no one will touch his teams leading scorer without paying the price.

Notes: In 57 games Kevin has 185 pim………….compiled 841 pim in 247 games in junior hockey playing for Portland, Seattle, and, Spokane of the WHL.

Jeff Salajko Team: Columbus Chill Pos: Goaltender
Ht: 6′ Wt:195 Contract: Kansas City Blades ( IHL )

Saljko has been simply amazing in net for the Chill . This years totals include a .939 save percentage and a stunning 2.08 goals-against average , plus 2 shutouts in 17 games. He has split time between the Blades and Columbus this year and hasn’t disappointed in either league. Jeff has dominated the ECHL, and deserves a full-time slot somewhere at the next level.

Notes: Set team records for wins (35), Save percentage (.914), and Games played (54) with Columbus last season…..earned 1996-97 Columbus Team MVP award…….. Played for the Sania Sting before turning pro.

Chad Remackel Team: Mobile Mysticks Pos: Forward
Ht: 6′ 1″ Wt: 195 Born: 11/9/71 Hometown: St. Paul, MN

A leader on and off the ice,Chad has the talent to change a game by himself. Mobile Head Coach Matt Shaw comments: ” He’s has proven he is a dominant player at this level, and has become a leader on this team.” Strong around the net, and good hands . Plays well in his own end….the list goes on and on…..

Contract: Washington Capitals
Ht: 5′ 10″ Wt: 180 Hometown: Moscow, Russia Age: 22
Drafted By: Washington Capitals 15th overall 1994

The Caps’ haven’t given up on this gritty centerman from CSKA. After 2 good seasons in Portland ( AHL ), he is the main attraction for the Ads’. He has piled up 20 goals and 37 assists for John Brophys club . Kharlamov also boasts a plus-25 in 55 games. The minute he fully adjusts to the North American style of hockey he’ll work his way up the depth chart.

Notes: Played for the Russian Pen’s on their 93-94 IHL tour scoring 2 goals and 2 assists
