The four Red Wings scrimmage teams faced off at Centre
I.C.E. Arena in Traverse City, MI to see who would win the Gold, Silver, and
Bronze titles of 2003 training camp.


Teams B and C faced off first to see who would get the
bronze with Team B winning 3-2. Teams A and D then faced off for the gold with
Team D finishing on top by a score of 5-3.


The teams played two periods the first being a 30 minute
running time and the second being a 20 minute stop time.


Ryan Barnes opened the scoring for Team C in the first game
with a shot that snuck past Manny Legace on the stick side. Brett Hull and Paul
Ballantyne had the assists.


Hull scored at 17:50 of the second period with a slapshot
from just above the hash marks over Jeff MacDougald’s shoulder. Kris Draper and
Clark Wilm assisted on the goal.


Darren McCarty scored the first goal for Team B with 1:17
left in the game with Pavel Datsyuk and Derian Hatcher getting the assists.


Datsyuk tied it up with 37.2 seconds remaining forcing a
five minute, four-on-four, overtime period.


Tomas Kopecky stole the puck in the defensive zone and
skated up ice with Derek King coming up the left wing. Hull was the only player
back for Team C as defensemen Nicklas Lidstrom and Ballantyne were behind the play.
Kopecky passed across to King who went in alone on Logan Koopmans giving a deke
and wrapping the puck around Koopmans pad, giving Team B the bronze title by a
score of 3-2.


Team’s A and D then took to the ice for the gold game.


Jiri Hudler scored an unassisted goal for Team D with a
slapshot past Dominik Hasek at 4:41 of the first period.


Hugo Boisvert tied the game up at 5:37 with assists from
Darryl Bootland and Jason Williams.


Steve Yzerman than put Team A up by one at 9:09 of the first
with Henrik Zetterberg and Boyd Devereaux picking up the assists.


Tomas Fleischmann stole the puck in the Team A’s zone and
slipped the puck between Hasek the right goal post at 20:00 of the first


Tim Skarperud gave the lead to Team D once again at 23:05.
Mark Mowers passed the puck across the front of the net to Nathan Robinson who
took a shot but was stopped by Hasek. Skarperud jammed the rebound in past Hasek’s


Yzerman scored his second of the night at 37 seconds into
the second period when Zetterberg made the perfect pass from behind the net toYzerman
waiting in front tying the game once again. Devereaux had the second assist.


Fleischmann than scored his second of the night at 5:43
regaining the lead for Team D assisted by Chris Chelios.


Brendan Shanahan closed out the scoring at 18:07 of the
second period putting the puck top shelf over Hasek’s shoulder with an assist
from Hudler. The Final score was 5-3 Team D.


First cuts


After the games the roster was trimmed by 14. Eleven players
were assigned back to their respective junior teams while the three other players
were released.
