OHL Press Release

In a thrilling final the 2006 OHL Cup Showcase Tournament, the Markham Waxers – the top rated team entering the tournament – were victorious by a 3-2 margin over the Toronto Red Wings.

The Waxers opened up a 3-0 lead and fended off the hard charging Red Wings to ice the win.

Steven Stamkos who was named the tournament Most Valuable Player opened the scoring in the first period for Markham. He beat Edward Pasquale on a set up from behind the net from Kelly Geoffrey. Mathew Maione also assisted on the goal.

Michael Del Zotto who was the MVP of the final game scored the second goal of the contest on a shot from the point while Markham was on the power play.

Tyler von Engelbrechten set up Dylan O’Neil on a crisp cross ice pass that O’Neil directed into the open side of the net for what proved to be the game winner at 9:51 of the second period. Luke Bartell also assisted on the play.

Both goaltenders played superbly throughout the contest with Mathieu Cadieux picking up the win to complete an undefeated tournament for the netminder.

Late in the second period Toronto started to mount a comeback keyed off by a goal Chris Dunham assisted by Mitch Gaulton and Kain Allicock.

Dunham scored his second goal of the contest late in the third to pull the Red Wings within one goal of the Waxers but that was as close as they would get despite a valent effort in the closing moments of the game.

All that was left was the celebrating as the Markham Waxers were crowned the 2006 OHL Cup Showcase champions.
