The Ontario portion of the 2006 ADT Canada Russia Challenge kicked off tonight at the Sarnia Sports and Entertainment Center. Team OHL came out victorious with a 5-0 win over the Russian Selects in front of a spirited crowd.
Toronto St. Michael’s Majors’ forward Matt Caria got the scoring started for the OHL finding the back of the net 8:25 into the first period. The goal was assisted by Dustin Jeffrey a Sarnia native and member of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. The game remained 1-0 in favour of the OHL until Cory Emmerton of the Kingston Frontenacs scored on assists from Chris Stewart and Justin Azevedo, 7:05 into the second period.
Oshawa Generals’ forward John Tavares extended the lead to 3-0 on a cross-ice feed from Chris Lawrence. Dustin Jeffrey also picked up his second assist of the game on the play. Emmerton scored his second goal of the game on the power-play at 18:11 of the second period. A pair of Sarnia Sting players, Ryan Wilson and Mark Katic drew assists on the play.
Bryan Little of the Barrie Colts scored the OHL’s fifth and final goal of the game on a setup from London Knights forward and OHL scoring leader Sam Gagner.
The OHL outshot the Russian Selects 38-23 in the contest and extended their record to 8-0 all time in the Canada Russia Challenge.
The teams will play once again on Monday evening at the new General Motors Centre, in Oshawa.
The ADT Canada-Russia Challenge will play a very important role in the selection process of Canada’s World Junior Hockey Championship roster as well as the Under-18 roster. Both games will be televised nation-wide on Rogers Sportsnet. The game played in Oshawa will also be broadcast by the Fan Radio network on www.chl.ca.
