History
2012-13: Dylan Strome skated for the Toronto Marlboros minor midget AAA team in the Greater Toronto league. He scored 65 goals with 78 assists in 60 games. The Marlboros won the GTHL championship and Strome was named the league’s top player. Playing in the 2013 OHL Cup with the Marlboros he scored 5 goals with 4 assists in seven games. Strome was selected by Erie in the first round (2nd overall) in the 2013 OHL Priority Draft.
2013-14: Strome skated in the OHL as a 16-year-old — joining another former Marlboro and 2015 draft-eligible forward, center Connor McDavid — with the Erie Otters. He played for Canada Ontario in the 2014 U17 World Hockey Challenge. Strome scored 10 goals with 29 assists in 60 regular season games and was +17 with 11 penalty minutes. Erie finished second to eventual Memorial Cup runner-up Guelph in the Midwest Division and lost to the Storm in the Western Conference finals. Strome scored 3 goals with 6 assists and was +2 with no penalties in 14 playoff games. He scored 6 goals with 5 assists in five games at the WHC, including 2 goals with 1 assist in Canada Ontario’s 6-3 win over Sweden in the fifth-place game.
2014-15: Strome led the OHL in scoring in his second season with the Erie Otters and played for the Canada U18 team in the 2014 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament. He scored 45 goals with a league-leading 84 assists and was +47 with 32 penalty minutes in 68 regular season games. Erie finished first in the Midwest Division and defeated Sault Ste. Marie in the Western Conference finals to reach the OHL Finals against Oshawa. Strome scored 5 goals with 1 assist and was +4 in five games at the Ivan Hlinka tournament as Canada captured a gold medal, defeating the Czech Republic, 6-2, in the gold medal game. Strome was ranked fourth amongst North American skaters in the Central Scouting final rankings and was selected by Arizona in the first round (third overall) in the 2014 NHL Draft.
Talent Analysis
Strome will make an impact at the NHL level with his size, intelligence with and without the puck, and his high-end offensive instincts. Strome has the potential to be a cornerstone for Arizona, and instantly becomes the team’s top prospect.
Future
Strome will get a long look at training camp in 2015-16, but ultimately would be best served by heading back to the Erie Otters of the OHL for at least one more season. Arizona, while getting younger and bringing a different, faster look, doesn’t figure to be competitive, which would afford Strome an opportunity to work on his skating stride and other small nuances before going pro.
