History
2011-12: Jansen Harkins played nine games, including three playoff contests, with the Vancouver NW Giants midget major team in British Columbia as a 14-year-old and was a captain for the North Shore Winter Club bantam team. He scored 2 goals with 5 assists with the Giants. Harkins was selected by Prince George with the second overall pick in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft.
2012-13: Harkins made his WHL debut with the Prince George Cougars in a November game against Vancouver — appearing in four other games throughout the season — and was the second-leading scorer for the midget major Vancouver NW Giants behind 17-year-old Jarid Lukosevicius. He had no points and was -3 with 2 penalty minutes in five WHL games. Harkins scored 14 goals with 45 assists and 14 penalty minutes in 37 regular season games for the Giants. The Giants defeated North Island, the Greater Vancouver Canadians and Okanagan to win the BCMML playoff title but missed out on a trip to the Telus Cup, falling to Alberta champion Red Deer in the Pacific Regional series. Harkins scored 1 goal with 9 assists and 14 penalty minutes in 8 BCMML playoff games.
2013-14: Harkins skated in 67 games for Prince George in his first WHL season and was a team captain for Canada Pacific in the 2014 World Hockey Challenge. He scored 10 goals with 24 assists and was -9 with 18 penalty minutes for the Cougars. Prince George finished fourth in the B.C. Division, six points behind Tri-City for the final Western Conference playoff spot. Harkins scored 1 goal with 5 assists and 4 penalty minutes in six games at the WHC for Canada Pacific, which advanced to the gold medal game before falling, 4-0, to the USA.
2014-15: Harkins led Prince George in scoring in his second WHL season and played for the Canada U18 team in the 2013 Ivan Hlinka Memorial and 2015 World Junior Championship tournaments. He scored 20 goals with 59 assists and was +7 with 45 penalty minutes in 70 regular season games for the Cougars. Prince George finished third in the B.C. Division and lost to Victoria in a first-round playoff series. Harkins had 4 assists and was -2 with 2 penalty minutes in five playoff games. He scored 2 goals with 4 assists and was +5 in five games for the gold medal-winning Canada squad at the Ivan Hlinka tournament and scored 3 goals with 2 assists, finishing +3 with 10 penalty minutes in seven games at the WJC. Canada defeated host Switzerland, 5-2, in the bronze medal game. Harkins skated for Team Orr in the 2015 CHL Top Prospects Game and was ranked 15th amongst North American skaters in the Central Scouting final rankings prior to the 2015 NHL Draft.
