The forward also made his Elitserien debut, skating in 2 games with AIK with no points.

2010-11: Nordstrom again suited up at several different levels in Sweden. He scored 9 goals, 11 assists in 25 games with the AIK J20 team, earning another 11 SEL games with the big club with 1 assist. 2011-12: Nordstrom skated in 47 games during the regular season for AIK in his first full season in Sweden’s Elitserien and was the assistant captain for gold medal-winning Sweden at the 2012 World Junior championship. Nordstrom had the third-best plus/minus for Sweden (plus-six) at the WJC and scored 1 goal with 4 assists. Sweden defeated Russia in the championship game.

2012-13: Loaned to AIK in Sweden after signing a three-year entry-level contract with Chicago in May 2012, Nordstrom made his North American debut with Chicago’s AHL affiliate Rockford in March following the Swedish Elitserien season. He was +2 with 3 assists and 12 penalty minutes in 11 games for the IceHogs. Rockford finished third in the Midwest Division, two points behind Milwaukee for the final Western Conference playoff spot. In Sweden, Nordstrom played in 43 of 55 games in his second season with AIK. He scored 5 goals with 4 assists and was -12 with 29 penalty minutes. AIK missed the playoffs – finishing ninth in the 12-team league.

He had 3 assists and was -5 with 4 penalty minutes, averaging 11 minutes of ice time with the Hawks during the regular season. He was -3 with no points nor penalty minutes, averaging 13 minutes of ice time during the playoffs. Nordstrom scored 9 goals with 7 assists and was -1 with 19 penalty minutes in 23 AHL games for the IceHogs. Five of his nine goals were scored on the power play.

Talent Analysis

Nordstrom is a two-way center with good skating ability. He is a capable player at both ends of the ice. Offensively, he is more of a set-up man with good vision, hockey sense, and accurate passing ability. Though he possesses a decent frame, his strength and physical play are still developing.

Nordstrom was acquired by Carolina in September 2015 in the multiplayer trade that brought Kris Versteeg to Raleigh. Now in his third pro season in North America, he appeared in 41 games — including three playoff games — during the Blackhawks' Stanley Cup season a year ago and will look to secure a lower line roster spot with the Hurricanes. While his offensive game will never compare to some of the other top young prospects out of Sweden, his size and two-way play make him valuable in a lower line role.

The Chicago Blackhawks went into the 2010 NHL Entry Draft plagued by uncertainty. Sure, the team was fresh off winning their first Stanley Cup in 49 years, but the celebration could only last so long. The fact of the matter was the Blackhawks were pressed against the salary cap, so the offseason would see general manager Stan Bowman make a flurry of trades and signings to ensure the Blackhawks were both cap-compliant and a Cup contender. It probably sounds familiar.
