2012-13:MacLeod played for the NTDP’s U17 team in his first season in Ann Arbor and was a team captain for Team USA at the 2013 U17 World Hockey Challenge. In 46 games with the NTDP U17 team he had 5 assists and a team-leading 93 penalty minutes. MacLeod had 2 assists and 18 penalty minutes in six games at the WHC as the USA finished third. 2013-14: MacLeod returned to Ann Arbor for his second season with the NTDP and played for the gold medal USA U18 team at the 2014 World Junior Championship. In 51 regular season games for the NTDP U18 team he scored 5 goals with 6 assists and was an even plus/minus with 70 penalty minutes. MacLeod scored 2 goals with 1 assist and was +4 in seven games at the WJC. The USA defeated the Czech Republic, 5-2, in the gold medal game. Partnered with Bruins’ prospect Matt Grzelcyk on the Terriers’ first defense pairing much of the season, he scored 2 goals with 7 assists in 37 games and was +19 with 58 penalty minutes. The Terriers finished first in Hockey East in the regular season and won seven straight post-season games — capturing the Hockey East and NCAA Northeast Region championships and defeating North Dakota, 5-3, in the Frozen Four semifinals — before falling to Providence, 4-3, in the national championship game.
Talent Analysis
MacLeod is a defense-first defenseman who plays a physical game. He is a team leader capable of seeing a lot of minutes and plays a simple, effective game. He is a bit undisciplined at times though some of his penalties are the result of his punishing style.
Future
MacLeod stepped into a top pairing role for Boston University as a freshman in 2014-15. Playing on one of the top teams in college hockey, he offered a stay-at-home complement to creative skating defenseman Matt Grzelcyk on the Terrier blue line. A hard-nosed defender with some skating ability and the stamina to see a lot of ice time, he is still fairly early in the development curve but has the desire and mindset to eventually be an effective shutdown defender.
