Despite a horrendous start to the 2015-16 campaign that the team simply couldn’t recover from, a number of young players received quality playing time with the Blue Jackets this season and get to continue their seasons now. It might be hard to hear for a fanbase that was expecting playoffs this season, but a bright future in Cleveland means good things for the Columbus Blue Jackets. A deep playoff run builds crucial experience for young players and instills winning habits. But beyond the pro level, the organization has had impressive prospect performances at both the junior and amateur level, as well as overseas.
Since Jarmo Kekäläinen took over the general manager duties for the Columbus Blue Jackets, the organization has shown a fondness for European prospects, particularly in the later rounds. The 2015 NHL Draft was a prime example of that when the Jackets went overseas for five of their nine draft picks, and given the success of some of those picks already it’s a trend that could be expected to continue. The 2015 NHL Draft saw six defensemen from Finland selected for only the second time since the draft was reduced to seven rounds in 2004. Though none of those players were selected in the top two rounds — as current Pittsburgh Penguin Olli Maatta was in the 2012 draft class that was previously the largest — the 2015 draft class has increased the number of NHL-drafted defensemen playing in Liiga. It has been a disastrous beginning for the Columbus Blue Jackets, who started the season without a win through their first seven games before dismissing Head Coach Todd Richards in favor of John Tortorella.
