Talent Analysis
Don’t let his smile on the ice fool you, Boikov is a nasty defenseman who will certainly staple you to the end boards if given the chance. Boikov scored 24 points in 64 games with a plus-11 rating for a terrible Drummondville Voltigeurs squad his draft year. His 24 points may be where his offensive game peaks as he is not known for taking too many chances in the offensive zone.
Future
Boikov is in his third season with the Drummondville Voltigeurs in the QMJHL in 2015-16 and skated for the silver-medal Russia U20 team at the 2016 World Junior Championship. A hard scrabble defender who plays a physical game, he has shown some offensive potential in junior hockey. His calling card at the pro level will be his ability to prevent scoring opportunities and provide a combative presence. Drafted as a 19-year-old, he is more advanced than other players taken in the 2015 NHL Draft but he is also closer to his ceiling in terms of potential.
