2008-2009 – Though somewhat overshadowed in Oulu by 17-year-old phenom Mikael Granlund, Pekkala was one of the top scorers in A juniors for the second straight season. He finished with 29 goals and 22 assists in just 37 games, and also earned his first ice time with the veteran-laden Karpat men’s team, playing in eleven games including one Champions League contest.
A bit of a late bloomer, Pekkala has put up big numbers at A and B junior the past three seasons. Not as polished or skilled as some of the other high profile players from Finland – Pekkala has never been part of the Team Finland junior teams – he is more of a sniper who relies on scoring instincts and a hard, accurate shot. Displays a willingness to play in small spaces. Pekkala must continue to develop his skating and stick handling skills to compete at the next level. His intensity and determination should help.
